AUDIO DESCRIPTION SCRIPTS FOR CINEMA, TV, THEATER, MUSEUMS, AND EXHIBITIONS

Inclusion and accessibility in media for blind and visually impaired audiences have taken center stage in recent years, with Audio Description (AD) rapidly gaining momentum.
Audio Description involves adding a descriptive narrative track to audiovisual content, converting key visual elements into spoken descriptions so that blind and visually impaired audiences can fully enjoy the experience. This specialized form of audiovisual translation applies to pre-recorded content (films, TV shows) as well as live events (theater productions, museum tours, and exhibitions).

AD plays a vital role in personal development, knowledge sharing, and social and professional inclusion. If you want to help break down communication barriers and promote equal media access, I am here to help you make it happen.

EXPERIENCE

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Linguistic Mediation from Macerata University (Italy), my final dissertation was about Afro-American English and its representation through the media. I then specialised in audiovisual translation and media accessibility through a Master’s Degree in Seville (Spain).
I then did several internships at subtitling agencies of various European countries, amongst these I completed my last traineeship at the audiovisual unit of the European Parliament in Luxembourg.
Later, I spent a year collaborating with a dubbing studio in Rome, providing dubbing assistance, post-production script transcription, and dialogue translation.

HOW IT WORKS

The audio description workflow is split into two main phases. I specialize in the first phase: writing and timing the descriptive script. The second phase—recording the narration—is handled by your designated voice artist or dubbing studio.
Writing an AD script means describing actions, visual elements, facial expressions, and settings as objectively as possible. The goal is to craft a fluid, seamless narrative that delivers an equivalent experience to the original visual work.

1. Preparation: I define the ideal style and approach based on the medium. For example, for a live stage production, I may recommend an audio introduction to be played before the show begins.

2. Analysis: I thoroughly review the content to map out the plot, pacing, character dynamics, and key visual details.

3. Pause & Gap Analysis: I map out dialogue pauses and audio gaps to determine exactly where descriptions fit without overlapping essential sound cues.

4. Scriptwriting: I craft precise, vivid, and concise descriptions using clear, objective, and direct language.

5. Final QA & Read-Through: I conduct a final review and perform a timed read-aloud simulation. This ensures tight timing and guarantees zero overlap with dialogues, key sound effects, or background music.
